Bath Spa University: A creative repositioning

Bath Spa University specialises in the creative arts. A new brand proposition meant a project to better align audience perceptions with the University’s redefined purpose and vision for the future. Delivery pressures on its in-house creative team highlighted room to find opportunities for efficiencies. Our design system gave them the creative alignment they needed, and gave their in-house team a tool to accelerate production of high-impact marketing materials in a time-pressured environment.

Through a series of collaborative workshops, we developed a refreshed identity for the University. Scalable, confident and bold, the design system is ambitious enough to deliver high-profile recruitment campaigns and detailed enough to guide the production of flagship prospectuses.

Our design language resonates with the target Gen Z audience, combining freedom of typography and a vibrant colour palette with authentic student-oriented photography and videography.

We applied the new brand in the creation of a campaign microsite, design of the UG prospectus and the creation of UCAS exhibition stands. The new energy and movement in Bath’s Spa’s marketing materials is raising the University’s profile and attracting applicants.

Working closely with the central marketing and in-house creative teams, we saw the impact of process and time pressures on the volume of creative work they were getting through. Drawing on our own streamlined processes, we introduced a web-based briefing system that now guides the creation of requests, gets them to the right person, reduces workload and increases quality and efficiency.

A brand only works if a whole organisation gets behind it. A series of training workshops delivered on-site at Bath Spa’s campus took members of the design, marketing and communications teams through their updated visual system. We left an energised, confident team, equipped to deliver outstanding creative and enjoy production efficiencies.
